sweltering hot today--as it should be at the end of May!  Today, they say, is Memorial Day--although, being a stick-in-the-mud, to me, it will always be May 30th, regardless.  As a child, Memorial Day [in my home town, we still called it Decoration Day] was my favorite holiday.  It was the biggest thing that happened in the tiny hamlet where I grew up!  The upstairs meeting room of the GAR hall filled up with folks from all over the county, and the students from the one room school house recited "pieces", all the kids who took music lessons played pieces, the choir from the Methodist Church sang a few selections, Rena Root recited the Gettysburg Address, and I'm sure much more, but those are the parts that stick in my mind over the decades.  Oh, the memories I carry through life from the 50s!  Anyhow, after, there was always an ice cream social at the Grange Hall.  It was also the day my father planted our garden.  My parents made sure we visited all the cemeteries where relatives were buried.  It was a grand holiday, filled with nostalgia and respect for those who had lost their lives in service to the nation, and deceased family members.

On the knitting front, I'm nearly finished with Elizabeth's socks..almost to toe decreases of sock #2.  I am sooo eager to finish them and send them to her!  So many of my fellow knitters talk about that term "second sock syndrome"...I don't really get it!  For me, getting the second sock done is a must, so they can be worn and I can cast on another one!!!  As a rule, the moment the yarn end is run in after weaving the toe together on one sock, I am grabbing a ball of yarn and casting on another!

Time to start supper...I've a smallish piece of lamb to roast! It has been a very long time since we had lamb-my oldest son brought this to me-what a thoughtful gift-and it needs to be roasted, regardless the heat, so...lamb for supper it is..

what a scorcher!  windows open, dog complaining, guys off to take hay mower on maiden voyage of the season...not your typical holiday weekend!  that said, Memorial Day, previously known as Decoration Day, has long been just about my favorite holiday! it conjures up childhood memories that I enjoy recalling.  Hence, tomorrow, I'll be waxing nostalgic.

David has selected the yarn for a pr socks, to be cast on as soon as the current ones are finished.  somehow it seems comforting to always have a sock in progress.

I've 2 bananas begging to be made into a cake, so as soon as the strongest heat of the day passes, I shall oblige.  Recipe to follow later today.

socks for Ashley

socks for Elizabeth
when your grandchildren live several states away, and you live on a farm, you don't get to see them a lot, if at all.  I knit socks to send them.  It serves as a reminder to them that I'm here and care about them, and lets me feel connected to them and their lives.

wow! May is nearly gone, and it seems as though it just began!  May is quite a month in my family!  My #3 son was born in May, on my parents' 45 wedding anniversary, a week after my brother's and a week and a day after my brother-in-law's birthdays!  Of course the month ends with Memorial Day, once called Decoration Day, which was always my favorite holiday back in the '50s.  How I loved that day!  How I enjoy remembering it.

Last night, I cast on and knit about 1 inch on a pr. toddler socks for a little girl in the family.  It'd been a very long time since I'd knit such wee socks!  As I remember, when my 2 youngest were little, I could knock off a pr socks for them in one afternoon.  Time will tell [guess it also depends on how many times I get interrupted.  I love having little ones to knit for! and my daughter's kids are supplying them generously!

A few days ago, we bought a hanging planter with red begonias in it, and Jim hung it on the branch of a tree near my chicken coop, visible from the living room window.  We're hoping it'll attract humming birds.  again, time will tell.  I'd wanted so much to have a few flower beds in the yard, but knew it'd be futile as long as my chickens were free to roam, so we settled for the hanging planter. I may invest in a few more, or a window box or two.

today was perfectly loverly!  I finished the socks for my sweet grand-daughter-in-law and am ready to knit a pair for her little girl.  As I love knitting socks, and of late I've had several requests for socks, I'm a happy knitter.  I do need to keep better records, tho, of what yarns I knit up for whom. I often worry I'll send a duplicate pair to someone.  I know..taking pictures is called for for sure...

Last night, we had tamale casserole for supper..when I mentioned it on facebook, some of my f/b contacts expressed interest in the recipe..it's so easy and soooo good!  Brown 1 lb. hamburger, chop and add 1 sm. onion and 1 clove garlic.  Add 1 med size tin each whole kernel corn and tomatoes and simmer that while you mix 3/4 cup milk, 1 cup cornmeal. and 1 egg, mix thoroughly and bake at 350 for 1 hour. I like to top it with cheese the last 5 or 10 min.  super easy/super yummy.

Looks as though blogspot has changed since my last visit. I've been woefully neglectful-things have been rather humdrum of late here.

On the knitting front, I've been knitting socks..plain socks of yummy yarns for some special relatives and friends.  Knitting plain socks is such a good way to keep the hands busy while the mind is busy dong things that do not involve the head.

Farm-wise, we've numerous new calves. today, the guys are attempting to get some weanlings rounded up to send to the sale..I'm hoping they succeed as it's time for them to go, with new babies being born.  Hard at times to part with some that have become pet-like.

I'm still trying to find [or contrive] a pattern to knit a round ripple ghan.  So many catalogs have crocheted ones; each time I think I've found what I want, it turns out a disappointment..I guess I'll just have to figure one out.
